What is EFT?

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. Sometimes it’s also referred to as tapping or people will also refer to it as psychological pressure.

I like to describe it in comparison to acupuncture because people are more familiar with acupuncture. During acupuncture, those tiny little needles are inserted into certain points of your body. The points are the end points of the meridians.

The meridians are how energy moves through the body. So if you’re someone who practices yoga, or familiar with Chinese medicine, you’ve likely heard of the meridians. And so with tapping, we’re gently applying acupressure at the same points as acupuncture.

There’s also an added component, which is speaking out loud as you’re tapping on these points to acknowledging how you are feeling. In general, humans don’t express or acknowledge how they feel. And the emotions are stuffed down deep inside.

When we experience uncomfortable emotions like anxiety, anger, sadness, and frustration, we oftentimes will stuff it down and then we’ll redirect our attention somewhere else.

We’ll distract ourselves with someone or something else. Works for the short term sometimes, and then in the long term, all that stuff that you’ve been stuffing down gets to a point where it’s going to explode. And sometimes it explodes emotionally into a meltdown or it’s physically where you start to have physical, chronic pain.

Through this process of tapping on the points and acknowledging how you’re feeling, you’re able to really hold space for the emotions so that you can move through them. It’s not trying to run away from your emotion, but you’re allowing yourself to feel it so that you can move through it and move forward.

That’s really what it’s about. It’s about feeling good in your body too, and it’s a very gentle practice that can help you to feel better.
